I have heard the term FIPPA (Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act) before, however, prior to this class, I had very little knowledge about what FIPPA pertained or how and where it should be applied. After learning about FIPPA this class, I can identify a couple of ways that it may impact my future practice.
First, I will need to be very aware of the photos that I am posting online, and moreover, be aware that any photos with students or colleagues in them should not be posted online. This means that if I want to share any of the activities that are happening in my classroom, I need to take care to ensure that the photos do not include identifiable information of any kind.
Additionally, if an assignment or activity in my classroom requires students or families to post their personal information or image I will need to make sure that I am receiving informed consent ahead of time. This means that if I am preparing activities ahead of time I will need to make notes and reminders for myself to reach out to families so I am aware of which student projects are impacted by FIPPA.
Overall, I think that understanding the basics of FIPPA is so critical for any prospective or practicing teacher. During the beginning of my career, I can keep reminders of my responsibilities with respect to FIPPA in a binder or folder to be easily accessible when I am designing lessons so that I am conscientious of what duties I have. This will ensure that FIPPA is prioritized in my practice.
